Why does my video require transcoding?

Any video media uploaded with a post on PostitOnline (no matter what the original video format is) needs to be transcoded into a streaming format so that all types of devices can load and playback the media without issue. This allows everything from handheld devices, desktop computers and modern TV's to be able to playback any video uploaded to PostitOnline. Videos are also transcoded to several playback sizes ranging in quality from small format like 360x480p up to 2K (2560x1440p); the playback size is automatically selected for you when watching a video based on the internet connection, device type and web-browser; however, you can select the playback format you would like to view - although this does not guarantee proper playback. If you switch to a size greater than your internet connection or web browser can handle - playback may skip and jump or not play at all.

The transcoding process also includes the creation of thumbnail images which can be used in timeline scrubbing and as the poster image for the video if one is not supplied.

Without transcoding, many videos wouldn't be viewable unless the user has a specific device, and depending on the size of the video may not even be playable in a browser.
