Making a Video With a Smartphone

Everyone knows that mobile is the new black, and that goes double for recording video! Many smartphones today record nearly as well as camcorders, and they have the added advantage of mobility.

Practically every smartphone on the market comes with two things that make video recording easy:

  • a decent amount of free space to store video files
  • a function for making them.

Depending on the smartphone you're using, the camcorder may have its own app button, or it may be contained elsewhere (often in a submenu of the camera app). If you're having trouble finding your phone's camcorder function, you can always check online--or ask on our forum, since we have members who are well-versed in recording videos from smartphones!

Smartphones generally have a decent amount of storage space, but you'll want to load the videos as soon as possible onto your computer or the web, as storing a number of long videos may use up a lot of your storage space.

How do you make a great video?

  • Record multiple takes. You're probably not going to get it just right the first time--or maybe even the second or third time! Relax. For the kinds of video you'll be doing for VideoAdds, there's nothing wrong with doing multiple takes until you get it to look the way you want it to. You can also record a video in parts and then put them together on your computer to make a seamless film.
  • Record more than you plan to use. You can edit out the extra parts later on. There's no reason to worry too much about getting the timing perfect the first time around.
  • <>li>Either connect the phone to your computer, or send the video there wirelessly. To copy files from your phone to your computer, connect the devices with a cable and use your phone's proprietary interface software (for example, iTunes for an iPhone) to transfer the files.

It should be very easy to send video files from your phone to your computer. Just look at the menu options in the phone's video app, and choose to send your video as an email attachment to your email address, then download the attachment onto your computer.
